The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has finally fixed March 22nd as start off date for this season’s Zenith Bank League. The President of the NBBF Mr Tijjani Umar and the Secretary of the Federation Mr. Francis Gbiri confirmed the date just as he confirmed that the teams have been put on immediate alert for the change in date. The Federation had announced April 7th as the start off date.
The new date was arrived at by the Federation after wide consultations and was announced online from Abuja yesterday.
The NBBF picked a cheque of N10m from Zenith Bank in Lagos penultimate Thursday as sponsorship fee for the year. But the new plan, Sunday and Monday have been classified as arrival dates while the actual court competition begins in Kano on Tuesday.
“I believe we are set to take the jump ball having collected the most important thing – the cheque. We have concluded arrangement to start March 22nd in Kano,”Umar said.
The first phase will hold in Kano as announced earlier while the next stop will be in Asaba before the Final-four play off in Lagos. The NBBF will announce the exact date for the second stage while the teams are in Kano. The women’s league had been originally slated to start March 17th in Kano before it was postponed last week.
“We had to take it back a little to maximise time because the Division one Competition will no longer start on the date announced.”
All ten teams that competed in the league last season are still expected this term. First Bank retained their title last year with new entrants First Deepwater as runners-up.
